About Us

After visiting a municipal dumpsite in 2017, community activist Phillip Nyalungu became invested in the lives of the waste pickers living there. Philip was studying Journalism and Media Studies at the time, and began working on a data journalism project about the experiences of the waste pickers.

Soon, Philip connected with students Laurence Stewart and Duncan Seoke to form an informal organisation of student committed to addressing social injustices. The organisation started out assisting the waste picker community to build a community garden.

Since 2019, the organisation has expanded to Johannesburg and Cape Town, working with grassroots movements and community-based organisations to share their stories of resilience. â€‹

In 2023, the organisation formally became associated as Grassroots Resilient Stories or GRStories for short.
