One of Waste Pickers Makhanda's core missions is to raise awareness about the essential role waste pickers play in the city's waste management system. Despite their daily contributions, many waste pickers feel invisible—excluded from official processes and overlooked by municipal officials, the media, and even residents who use the landfill. They say the way others perceive them often clashes with how they see themselves: not as nuisances, but as vital workers sustaining the city’s environmental health.

This week, the waste pickers featured on Radio Grahamstown to share their movement and the work they're doing. Monde Xinwa discusses the progresses and challenges of the project and emphasises the need of sustainability and progress.

"We are human beings. We make a living out of waste picking."
