Welcome to the Waste Pickers Movement in Makhanda, where we champion fair representation and advocate for the rights of waste pickers in our community.

 

Our mission includes ensuring access to nutrition and healthcare, while empowering waste pickers to self-represent and reshape their narratives in local media. Through initiatives like radio interviews, online publications, and community engagement, we strive to reframe the media's portrayal of waste pickers. Join us in our efforts to improve health and safety for informal workers, promote community gardening, and foster climate action and waste management solutions.

We have been here since 2017 and have participate in Research with Rhodes University, Service Learning projects and worked with media outlets locally and internationally.
